Herbal & Agricultural Sciences through S.T.E.A.M

This curriculum is designed to equip students for 21st century problem-solving processes that target a variety of topic driven issues within the related areas of science, mathematics, engineering, and technology vocations throughout our nation and world. Uniquely, our school specializes in the study of herbal and agricultural sciences. While incorporating a S.T.E.A.M approach students will study biological and biochemical properties of plants, fungi, and other natural substances. This will also include food and fiber production, technologies of soil and crop cultivation, harvesting, and human consumption through the process of plant and animal production. Establishing a horticultural environment will provide students with the opportunity to become accustomed to plants, garden cultivation, management skills, and an overall healthy love for the sciences.

Healthy Living & Physical Fitness

Foods grown by our students within the school garden will be used to teach healthy cooking and living. Within this model students learn about nutrition, healthy habits and food choices, vegetable and herb flavor profiles, food prep skills and management, recipe writing, math concepts such as measurements and fractions, property changes when cooking foods, cross-cultural dishes, and food distribution.  Our school’s servant leadership model emphasizes the principle of stewardship. One must be able to take care of and manage his/her body (physical temple) to effectively serve fulfilling their purpose within the community. In

demonstrating growth of various concepts within this discipline, students will present a food show before the parent body each quarter.

Along with healthy eating and cooking comes physical fitness. This concept is supported by the “exercise hypothesis.” Students will have a block of time to engage in exercise daily. Exercise not only encourages physical and mental health, but also provides such benefits like increased learning in the classroom, academic performance, and higher cognitive processing speeds. Aerobic exercise has a correlation with cognitive control that will help guide our students toward specific goals and decision making.

Career Education & Vocational Training

Career education is a course that’s built into our curriculum beginning at the kindergarten level. Having the opportunity to explore different career professions and occupations early on creates the necessary schema and background knowledge that will help students make rational decisions when choosing their career paths in the future. Instructors craft lessons where students can think critically, examine, survey, and assess if certain professions are of interest to them. Our k-5 students will participate in hands-on learning activities, complete projects, interact in role-playing, build jobs skills through play creating mock townships & cities, enjoy field trips, and career days.

In addition to career education courses, CHSA offers a co-op program for older grade bands 9th-12th. This awesome program allows students to practice classroom skills as well as gain practical, hands-on experience through internships within the desired career field of their choosing before graduation. This competitive advantage will give students a head-start into the workforce and assist them in determining which career path is best suited for them.

College Credit Plus

Providing multiple opportunities to prepare our students for “college and career readiness” is what our staff is committed to doing here at CHSA. This initiative is supported through the college credit plus program. Students will have an opportunity beginning at grade 7th to pursue and earn high school and college credits from approved colleges and universities in the state of Ohio. This program will allow students to get a jump start into taking college courses as well as fulfilling high school requirements ALL at the same time.

Holistic Education & Skill Building

Providing an educational platform that caters to the whole person is needed for today’s 21st century learner. Presenting thematic courses that address multiple

perspectives and cross-curricular subjects not only helps with cognitive growth, but also assists with social development. Within these courses students will explore different learning styles with the objective of being able to identify their own. Acknowledging and understanding one’s learning style will help build self-awareness about how he/she learns within the classroom and in life. In addition, students engage in problem-solving exercises that address the current issues of this generation and real-world problems. Courses are crafted to allow students to engage in community interactions, recognize their strengths, practice emotional reflection, develop empathy for others, learn effective listening skills, and analyze critical literacy. Our goal is to increase student motivation through lesson creation that builds basic skills for everyday matters that are relevant to students' lives, and that focus on realistic issues.

Servant Leadership

Our aim is to create an environment that prepares individuals for leadership through the act of service. Having a servant mindset produces humility, character, decision making skills, and a team first concept. Building servant leaders that are equipped for society and the real-world is our goal here at CHSA. The servant leadership principles are as follows: 1.) Listening, 2.) Empathy, 3.) Healing, 4.) Awareness, 5.) Persuasion, 6.) Conceptualization, 7.) Foresight, 8.) Stewardship, 9.) Commitment to the Growth of People, and 10.) Building Community.

The greatest example of a servant leader is that of Jesus Christ. Studying the life and ministry of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, is the biblical and foundational blueprint of CHSA’s institutional structure.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Providing opportunities for students to express themselves through the arts and other activities of interest like dance, theater/stage plays, musicals, film study, video production, and athletics are all components that make CHSA a well-rounded school for the 21st century. These key areas of interests will create balance within the lives of our learning community producing a healthy culture and excitement about school.
